Student answer (Band 7.5)

The bar graph illustrates about the buying and drinking habits of coffee and tea in five different Australian cities, categorised in 3 different categories. Unit of measure is the percentage of the city residents.

Overall, people living in Melbourne are the ones who have visited a cafe for coffee or tea in last 4 weeks whereas in the same time period, Adelaide shows the least percent of it's residents visiting cafes for the same reason. Most percent of Hobart residents have bought instant coffee in the last 4 weeks while Brisbane's resident percentage buying fresh coffee is least across all five cities.

In detail, over 60% of Melbourne's residents have been to a cafe in last 4 weeks for either coffee or tea. In comparison, only around 46.5% of Adelaide's residents have visited a cafe for the same reason. Considering the number of residents who have bought instant coffee in last 4 weeks, roughly 54.5% of Hobart residents and only around 45.5% of Sydney residents have done so. On the other hand, only about 34.5% of Brisbane's residents have bought fresh coffee in the last 4 weeks and in contrast about 44% of Sydney's residents have considered buying fresh coffee in last 4 weeks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response covers all requirements of the task. You have successfully identified the main features and provided relevant comparisons between the five cities. The overview is clear, and the data points are accurately selected to support your summary. To reach a higher band, ensure that you avoid minor inaccuracies in data reporting; for instance, you mention 'Most percent of Hobart residents', which is slightly awkward phrasing. Additionally, ensure that all data points are clearly linked to the specific categories (cafe visits, instant coffee, fresh coffee) to avoid any ambiguity. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organised with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In comparison', 'On the other hand', and 'In contrast' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is logical, moving from a general overview to specific details. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the data. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother; some sentences feel slightly disconnected. Overall, the flow of information is easy to follow, and the use of cohesive devices is generally accurate and helpful.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'illustrates', 'categorised', and 'in contrast' are used appropriately. However, there are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'Most percent of' (should be 'The highest percentage of') and 'illustrates about' (the verb 'illustrate' does not take 'about'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range of synonyms for 'buying' and 'visiting' would further enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'it's residents' (should be 'its') and 'in last 4 weeks' (missing the article 'the'). Additionally, 'illustrates about' is a grammatical error. Despite these slips, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on the correct use of articles and possessive pronouns. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures, such as using more subordinate clauses, would also help in demonstrating a wider grammatical range.
