Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The provided tabular chart depicts about the survey results of the people buying tea and coffee along with their drinking habits in five of the Australian cities. The data is calibrated in percentile.

Overall it is crystal clear that most of the population went to a cafe for coffee or tea in the last four week while the least number of people have bought fresh coffee in the same time period.

At a fleeting glance it is evident that in the cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart the residents who went to a cafe for coffee or tea were between 60% to 65% while there was a reduction in the same type of people in the city of Brisbane at about 56% and Adelaide at approximately 49%. Whereas the ratio of people who bought fresh coffee in the past 4 weeks was almost similar in the cities of Sydney and Melbourne at less than 45% and in Brisbane and Adelaide at about 34% along with more than 35% in Hobart.

Furthermore, more of the fluctuation was seen the number of people who bought instant coffee in past 4 weeks as the proportion was more than 45% in both Sydney and Melbourne while the percentage was less than 55% in Brisbane and Hobart along with exactly 50% in Adelaide.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the task, identifying the three categories and comparing data across the five cities. You have successfully highlighted the main features, such as the high cafe attendance and the variations in coffee purchasing habits. However, the analysis could be improved by being more precise with the data. For instance, stating 'less than 45%' for Sydney and Melbourne is accurate, but comparing it to Hobart's 'more than 35%' is slightly vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently use the exact figures provided in the chart to support your comparisons, rather than using broad approximations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The use of cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'At a fleeting glance', and 'Furthermore' helps guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more balanced. The overview is clear, but ensure that the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are slightly repetitive in structure, which affects the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly, using terms like 'calibrated', 'proportion', and 'fluctuation'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'depicts about the survey results' is redundant; 'depicts the survey results' would be more natural. Similarly, 'the data is calibrated in percentile' is slightly awkward; 'the data is presented in percentages' would be more standard. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'most of the population went to a cafe... in the last four week' (should be 'weeks') and 'more of the fluctuation was seen the number of people' (missing 'in'). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly clunky, such as 'reduction in the same type of people'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions.
