Student answer (Band 7.0)
The given figure helps us understand and differentiate how coffee and tea are bought and consumed in five different cities sydney, melbourne, brisbane, adelaide and hobart of austrailia.
Mainly most of the cities follow same trend where majority of residents prefer to go to a cafe for coffee. Furthermore, buying fresh coffee has been the most unpopular trend in all the cities. Moreover, the number of people buying instant coffee has always remained in between the residents buying fresh coffee and the people going to a cafe for a coffee. However, in Adelaide the number of people buying instant coffee has surpassed the number of people going out to a cafe for coffee.
Melbourne has 64% of the residents who go out to a cafe for coffee which is the highest among all the cities. Whereas, only 49% of people in Adelaide go out to a cafe for coffee. Additionally, Sydney, Brisbane and Hobart have 61%, 56% and 63% of residents respectively going out to a cafe to drink coffee.
Hobart has 54% of residents who buy instant coffee making it as the city with highest number of instant coffee drinkers as compared to other cities. Additionally, Sydney is the city with the least number of residents; only 46% who buy instant coffee as compared to other cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided relevant comparisons. You covered all three categories (cafe, instant coffee, fresh coffee) and included data for all five cities. The overview is clear, and the selection of data is appropriate. To reach a higher band, ensure you include all data points mentioned in the chart; for instance, you omitted the data for 'fresh coffee' entirely, which is a key component of the prompt. Including a brief mention of the fresh coffee figures would have provided a more comprehensive summary of the information presented in the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a logical progression of ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'furthermore', 'moreover', and 'whereas' to link your points. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by grouping the data more effectively—perhaps by category rather than just city-by-city. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better connect the general trends to the specific city data.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'surpassed', 'residents', and 'consumed' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'unpopular trend' (which is slightly awkward in this context) and 'making it as the city'. While you successfully convey the meaning, the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and lacks the more sophisticated, precise terminology that would elevate the response to a higher band. Focusing on more varied ways to describe statistical trends would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several punctuation and capitalization errors, such as failing to capitalize city names (e.g., 'sydney', 'melbourne') and the country name 'austrailia'. Additionally, there are minor grammatical slips, such as 'most of the cities follow same trend' (missing an article) and 'the least number of residents; only 46% who buy'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing your control over articles and sentence punctuation will improve your accuracy.
