Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all three categories (fresh coffee, instant coffee, and cafe visits) across the five cities. However, the reporting of data is somewhat repetitive and lacks analytical depth. For instance, the phrase 'near to' is used excessively, which obscures the actual data points. While the main features are identified, the comparison between cities could be more sophisticated. The overview provided in the conclusion is acceptable, but it would be better placed as an introduction or a distinct overview paragraph to better highlight the main trends. The response addresses the requirements but lacks the precision expected for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into three paragraphs, which is a logical structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'followed by' are used repeatedly to link sentences, which makes the flow feel a bit monotonous. Additionally, the transition between the data points is sometimes abrupt. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, the lack of varied linking words and the somewhat simplistic paragraph structure limit the score. Improving the use of referencing and varied transition signals would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is a heavy reliance on basic verbs like 'bought' and 'prefer'. The student uses 'least dominating' and 'maximum amount of' in ways that are slightly unnatural in an academic context. There are also some spelling errors, such as 'Melbourn' and 'Adilaide'. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'percentage', 'predominant', or 'marginal', and ensure consistent spelling of proper nouns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'population... buy'), incorrect use of relative pronouns (e.g., 'who consumed' for cities), and punctuation errors. The sentence 'The five Australian cities are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart who consumed coffee and tea in last 4 weeks' is grammatically awkward. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevents a higher score. More attention to articles and verb tense consistency is needed.
