Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response attempts to summarize the data, but it fails to provide a clear overview of the main trends. While it identifies some specific figures, the reporting is often inaccurate or vague, such as stating 'on about 50% almost' for Brisbane and Adelaide, which does not accurately reflect the data points. The response lacks a systematic comparison between the cities, and the description of the axes is unnecessary and distracts from the task. To improve, you should focus on grouping the data logically (e.g., comparing the highest and lowest performers) rather than listing cities individually without clear analytical purpose.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical flow is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as 'At a glance it appears that...' and 'Now for Hobart...'. The transition between sentences is disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison of the five cities. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks a clear progression of ideas. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'In contrast', 'Similarly', 'Conversely') and ensure each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through the data.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'outcome of evaluation done of', 'folks that purchase', and 'invested in cafes'. The phrasing is often unnatural, which hinders the clarity of the report. You rely on basic descriptors and struggle to use precise terminology related to data analysis. To improve, focus on learning collocations related to charts and trends, such as 'a significant proportion', 'the majority of', or 'a notable difference'. Avoid informal language like 'folks' and ensure you use accurate terminology for the data categories provided.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Adelaide includes folks that purchase'), incorrect pluralization (e.g., 'coffee's', 'instants'), and awkward sentence structures. The use of articles is also inconsistent throughout the text. While there is an attempt at complex sentences, they are often poorly constructed and contain errors. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structure, specifically subject-verb agreement and the correct use of plural nouns. Proofreading for common errors like unnecessary apostrophes will also significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
