Student answer (Band 6.5)

The data illustrates the outcome of a survey on individuals' habits of purchasing and drinking coffee and tea in five different urban areas in Australia in the last one month. The figures are given in percentages.

Overall, it can be seen that people from most Australian cities visited a cafe more for coffee or tea in the last four weeks, while fresh coffee was least bought by the residents.

Individuals from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Hobart mostly went to the cafe for coffee or tea. The figures for Melbourne and Hobart were around 60%. This was followed by residents from Sydney at slightly above 60% and Brisbane at 55%. The percentages of those who reside in Hobart and Brisbane were from above 50%, while Adelaide was just under 50%.

In contrast, buying fresh coffee was least common habits among residents. The percentages of fresh coffee purchase from individuals living in Sydney and Melbourne were just below 45% and those in Brisbane and Adelaide were under 35% which was the lowest figure.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided relevant comparisons between the five cities. You covered both categories (cafe visits and fresh coffee purchases) and included data points to support your observations. However, the report could be improved by ensuring the data is presented more accurately. For instance, you mentioned that figures for Melbourne and Hobart were around 60%, but the chart shows them at different levels. Additionally, your description of the 'fresh coffee' category is slightly confusing, as you state it was the 'least common habit' while the chart shows it as a specific category of purchase. To reach a higher band, ensure your data reporting is precise and your comparisons are clearly linked to the provided visual information.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', and 'This was followed by' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the overview and the first body paragraph could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as when you refer to 'the percentages of those who reside in Hobart and Brisbane were from above 50%'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus will help improve the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, using terms like 'urban areas', 'outcomes', and 'residents'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'least common habits' should be 'the least common habit', and 'fresh coffee purchase from individuals' is slightly awkward; 'fresh coffee purchases by individuals' would be more natural. You rely on some repetitive phrasing, such as 'the percentages of'. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'figures' (e.g., 'proportions', 'data points') and work on more precise collocations to describe statistical trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'the outcome of a survey on individuals' habits of purchasing and drinking coffee' is a bit wordy, and 'the percentages of those who reside in Hobart and Brisbane were from above 50%' contains an unnecessary preposition. There are also minor issues with article usage and pluralization (e.g., 'least common habits'). To reach a higher band, focus on reducing these small errors and increasing the variety of complex sentence structures, such as using more subordinate clauses to link your ideas more fluidly.
