Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features of the data across the five cities. However, the overview is missing; a successful Task 1 response must include a summary of the most significant trends or differences. While you have reported the figures, the analysis lacks a comparative synthesis. For example, you list the data for each city individually rather than grouping them to highlight that cafe visits were generally the most popular activity across all locations. To improve, ensure you include an introductory overview paragraph that highlights the overall trends before diving into the specific data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical, relying heavily on simple sentence structures to list data city by city. The use of cohesive devices is limited; for instance, you use 'However' to introduce Brisbane, but it does not logically contrast with the previous paragraph about Melbourne. To reach a higher band, try to use more varied linking words and phrases to connect your comparisons, such as 'In contrast to Sydney,' or 'Similarly, Hobart shows a pattern where...'. This would create a smoother flow between your observations.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information, such as 'percentage', 'individuals', and 'residents'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, you write 'describes us about' (should be 'describes') and 'went for a fresh cup of coffee' (a bit informal). Additionally, there are minor spelling errors like 'Austrailia' and 'prefered'. To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'the proportion of,' 'a significant majority,' or 'remained consistent.' Expanding your range of synonyms for 'buying' and 'going to' will also enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'Brisbane give the highest number' (subject-verb agreement error: should be 'gives') and 'the number of people choosing fresh coffee is exactly the same as Brisbane' (comparison error: should be 'that of Brisbane'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. Focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and checking for missing articles or prepositions. Practicing more complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses, will also help demonstrate better control.
