Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons across the five cities. You successfully highlighted the trends for cafe visits, fresh coffee, and instant coffee. However, the analysis could be improved by grouping the data more effectively to highlight key trends rather than listing figures city by city. For instance, identifying that Melbourne and Hobart consistently lead in cafe visits while Brisbane and Adelaide show different patterns would provide a more analytical overview. The overview is present but could be more concise to better reflect the 'main features' rather than just summarizing the data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'in contrast', and 'furthermore' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by grouping the three categories (cafe, fresh, instant) more distinctly to avoid jumping between topics. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences in the final paragraph is slightly repetitive due to the structure of the comparisons. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'exhibited', 'prioritised', and 'marginally'. However, there are several persistent errors in word choice and form, such as 'people those went' (should be 'people who went') and 'people... brought fresh coffee' (should be 'bought'). The confusion between 'brought' (past of bring) and 'bought' (past of buy) is a recurring issue that impacts the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring the correct verb forms are used in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Around 63% of people in Melbourne went to a cafe... and this is the highest figure'. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and relative clauses, such as 'people those went' and 'people... prioritised to brought'. Additionally, there are minor errors in subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the response from reaching the 7.0 band. Focusing on proofreading for verb tense consistency would be highly beneficial.
