Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers all parts of the task by reporting data for all five cities and three categories. However, the presentation is somewhat fragmented. While you have identified key features, the report lacks a clear overview or summary of the main trends, which is essential for a Band 7 or higher. The information is presented as a list of data points rather than a cohesive analytical report. To improve, ensure you group information logically—for example, by comparing the highest and lowest figures across all cities—rather than simply listing statistics city by city.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response uses bullet points, which is inappropriate for an IELTS Academic Task 1 report. The text should be organized into clear paragraphs (Introduction, Overview, and Body Paragraphs). While there is some attempt at logical sequencing, the lack of standard paragraphing and the reliance on bullet points significantly hinders the flow. Cohesive devices are used sparingly and sometimes incorrectly (e.g., 'Finally' is used, but the preceding structure does not support a logical progression). The referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between cities.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. You use phrases like 'bought the fresh coffee' and 'people who bought' repeatedly. There are also several spelling errors (e.g., 'intereted', 'campare', 'bough', 'prefered') and awkward phrasing such as 'coffee cafe'. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more varied vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'purchased', 'consumed', 'a significant proportion', or 'the majority of respondents'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include '64% goes went to cafe', 'as 55% in brisbane', and '44% people bought'. Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are inconsistent. Punctuation is also problematic, with inconsistent capitalization and the use of hyphens as bullet points. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement and correct verb tenses.
