Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarize the data, but it fails to provide a clear and accurate overview. Several data points are missing or incorrectly transcribed, such as the percentages for Brisbane, which are left blank. The overview is also slightly inaccurate, as it claims fresh coffee is the least favorite in every city, while the data shows variations. To improve, you must ensure all figures are accurately reported and that your summary reflects the actual trends shown in the chart. You should also avoid making generalizations that are not supported by the data provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical flow is hindered by repetitive phrasing and a lack of cohesive devices. Transitions between cities are mechanical, and the referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparisons. While there is a basic structure, the lack of effective linking words and the inconsistent use of referencing mean that the progression of ideas is not always smooth. Using a wider variety of cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'in contrast', or 'similarly' would help improve the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'loved by', 'bought', and 'went to'. There are also several errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'the chart display outcome' instead of 'the chart displays the results' and 'take over other options' instead of 'outperforms other options'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'preference', 'surpassed', and 'marginal'. Spelling errors, such as 'sydney' (capitalization) and 'numers', also detract from the overall quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('the chart display', 'fresh coffee remain'), missing articles, and incorrect verb tenses. Sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at complex sentences are often faulty or contain punctuation errors, such as the list of percentages in the Melbourne paragraph. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb forms, and using articles appropriately. Proofreading for basic errors like capitalization and pluralization would also significantly improve your score.
