Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart below reports the results, in terms of percentage, of a survey conducted on people living in 5 different Australian cities and they habits of buying and drinking coffee and tea.
Overall, the majority of the people have been to a cafe for coffee or tea in the last month across all the cities, with the only exception of Adelaide; effectively, in that city seems to be more common for people to buy instant coffee than going into caffé. Moreover, the survey highlights that buying fresh coffee, during last month, is the less widespread choice in all 5 cities.
While Melbourne presents the higher percentage of residents who have been to a café during the last 4 weeks, with almost the 65%, Adelaide has the lowest percentage strugling to reach the 50%. On the other hand, Hobart and Sydney have remarkable percentage of residents who use to go to café too, respectivly the 63% and the 61%.
As regards the percentage of people who bought fresh coffee, instead, Sydney has the highest rate (almost the 45%), while Brisbane and Adelaide have just the 35%, positioning at the last for this kind of habits.
Buying instant coffee is widespread too, even if less common than going into café, reaching a peak of almost 55% in Hobart.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the data, including the three categories of coffee/tea habits across five cities. You successfully identify the main trends, such as the popularity of cafes in Melbourne and the lower rates of fresh coffee consumption. However, the analysis could be improved by ensuring all comparisons are precise. For instance, stating that Adelaide is the 'only exception' regarding cafe visits is slightly inaccurate, as the data shows it is simply the lowest, not an outlier in a different category. Additionally, ensure that all data points mentioned are clearly supported by the chart to avoid minor inaccuracies in reporting.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'While', 'On the other hand', and 'As regards' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'in that city seems to be more common', which lacks a clear subject. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different categories of data, which helps the reader follow your comparison of the five cities.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'widespread', 'remarkable', and 'peak'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'they habits' (should be 'their habits'), 'going into caffé' (should be 'going to a cafe'), and 'positioning at the last' (should be 'ranking lowest'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range of synonyms for 'percentage' and 'rate' would further improve the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the 'While...' construction. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the higher percentage', 'the 65%') and prepositions ('in that city seems to be'). There are also spelling errors like 'strugling' and 'respectivly'. While these errors rarely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to suggest a lack of control over more complex structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of definite articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
