Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the data but struggles with accuracy and clarity. The interpretation of the data is problematic; for instance, the student refers to '6 decade' and 'four weeks' in a way that does not align with standard chart interpretation. While the main features (the percentages for the five cities) are identified, the description of the trends is confusing and lacks a clear overview. The data points provided (64%, 63%, 61%, 55%, 50%) are presented, but the surrounding analysis is often inaccurate or irrelevant, such as the claim that the habits are 'blowing' in Australian cities. The response fails to clearly distinguish between the categories of 'bought fresh coffee' and 'visited a cafe' if those were the intended metrics.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inappropriate, such as 'At second Hobart have...' and 'After that Sydney, Brisbane, and Adelaid takes place.' These transitions do not effectively link the ideas. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall flow is hindered by awkward phrasing and a lack of clear thematic grouping. While there is an attempt at an introduction and conclusion, the body paragraphs lack a cohesive structure that would allow the reader to follow the comparison of the five cities easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often misused. Phrases like 'consequences if a survey' instead of 'results of a survey' and 'coffee brought rates' instead of 'coffee purchasing rates' indicate a lack of precision. There is also an issue with word choice, such as 'explode' and 'join the party,' which are too informal for an Academic Task 1 report. The repetition of 'drinking habit' and 'coffee and tea' suggests a limited range of vocabulary. Spelling errors, such as 'Adelaid' and 'steping,' further detract from the overall quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are significant issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The chart below present,' 'Adelaide have lowest rate') and tense usage. Sentence structures are generally simple and often contain errors in word order or preposition usage. Complex structures are attempted but are usually inaccurate, such as 'the coffee brought rates is growing.' Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of commas. The high frequency of errors in basic sentence construction prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
