Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarize the data but struggles with clarity and accuracy. While you identify the main features, the interpretation of the data is often confusing. For instance, the statement that 'Melbourne and Hobart [had] the highest percentage of instant coffee' is not clearly supported by the data provided, and the comparisons are frequently muddled. You mention 'fresh coffee had the lowest percentage in Brisbane and Adelaide' but fail to provide a clear overview of the trends across all five cities. The report lacks a cohesive summary of the key differences between the categories (cafe visits vs. home consumption). To improve, focus on grouping the data logically and ensuring that the figures cited accurately reflect the chart.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as the transition 'Meanwhile, Sydney and Melbourne are purchasing...' which does not clearly link to the previous sentence. Referencing is also problematic; it is often unclear which city or category is being discussed due to imprecise phrasing. The structure within paragraphs is disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison of the five cities. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each sentence clearly relates to the previous one would significantly enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. You frequently use phrases like 'highest percentage' and 'last four weeks,' which makes the writing feel monotonous. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'purchasing coffee or tea in the cafe for last 4 weeks,' which is slightly unnatural. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic meaning, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. To improve, try to use a wider range of synonyms for 'percentage' (e.g., 'proportion,' 'figure') and vary your sentence structures to avoid repeating the same phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'Melbourne and Hobart, the highest percentage of instant coffee during the period' lacks a main verb. There are also issues with article usage ('the highest percentage of people went to a cafe') and prepositional errors. Punctuation is inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors suggests a lack of control over complex structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and basic sentence construction will help improve your accuracy.
