Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the chart, identifying trends across the five cities. However, the analysis is somewhat repetitive and lacks a clear, cohesive structure. While you have selected key data points, the comparison between cities could be more sophisticated. For instance, instead of listing percentages for each city individually, grouping them by high and low performers would demonstrate better analytical skills. Additionally, the final sentence contains a factual error by referring to the cities as 'countries', which impacts the accuracy of the report. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data is interpreted accurately and that the overview highlights the most significant trends rather than just listing figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into a single paragraph, which makes it difficult to follow the logical progression of ideas. A standard IELTS Task 1 response should be divided into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group related information. While there is a basic attempt at linking ideas, the use of cohesive devices is limited and somewhat mechanical. The transition between the description of coffee habits and the final summary is abrupt. To improve, use clear paragraph breaks to separate the overview from the detailed data analysis and employ a wider range of linking words to connect your sentences more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely heavily on basic phrasing such as 'people of' and 'bought'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'buying of people of coffee', which is grammatically confusing. The use of 'cafeteria' is slightly imprecise in the context of modern coffee culture, where 'café' or 'coffee shop' would be more natural. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'purchased' or 'consumed' and use more precise terminology to describe the data trends, such as 'a significant proportion' or 'a marginal difference'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally hinder clarity. For example, 'more than sixty percent people of Sydney' should be 'more than sixty percent of people in Sydney'. There are also issues with article usage and prepositions, such as 'in last 4 week' instead of 'in the last four weeks'. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve the overall accuracy of your writing.
