Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the data, but it lacks a clear, analytical approach. While you have identified the three categories (fresh coffee, instant coffee, and cafe visits), the reporting is largely a list of figures rather than a synthesis of trends. The overview is somewhat inaccurate, as it claims 'very few' bought fresh coffee, whereas the data shows figures ranging from 34% to 44%, which is significant. Additionally, there is a factual error in the body paragraph where you mention 'last 4 years' instead of 'last 4 weeks'. To improve, focus on grouping the cities by their similarities or highlighting the most striking differences rather than listing every data point for every city.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the progression of ideas is mechanical. You rely on basic transition words like 'However' and 'Moreover', and the internal cohesion within paragraphs is weak. For instance, the transition between the data for Sydney and Melbourne is abrupt. The referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the phrase 'other are 56%'. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider range of cohesive devices to link sentences and ensure that the flow between your comparisons is smoother and more logical.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You frequently repeat words like 'bought', 'people', and 'percentage'. There are also spelling errors such as 'freash' and 'residence' (used instead of 'residents'). The range of vocabulary is limited to basic descriptive terms. To improve, try to use synonyms and more precise reporting verbs or nouns, such as 'purchased', 'consumers', 'proportion', or 'figures'. Using more sophisticated collocations related to data reporting will help you demonstrate a wider lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'The chart illustrate' (subject-verb agreement), '465 bought' (likely a typo for 46%), and 'in the Hobart' (incorrect article usage). There are also issues with punctuation and sentence construction, such as the run-on list of percentages. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. Focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring that your sentences are grammatically complete.
