Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The bar chart compares the percentages of residents in five Australian cities who bought fresh coffee, bought instant coffee, or visited a café for coffee or tea during the previous four weeks.

Overall, visiting a cafe was the most popular activity in four of the five cities, while buying fresh coffee was the least common. Adelaide was the only city where the proportions of people visiting cafés and purchasing instant coffee were almost identical.

In terms of cafe visits, Melbourne recorded the highest figure at approximately 64%, closely followed by Hobart at around 63%. Sydney ranked next with about 61%, whereas Brisbane and Adelaide had lower percentages of roughly 55% and 50%, respectively.

Purchasing instant coffee was generally more popular than buying fresh coffee across all cities. Hobart had the highest proportion of instant coffee buyers, at about 54%, followed by Brisbane (53%) and Adelaide (50%). The figures were lower in Melbourne (48%) and Sydney (46%).

By contrast, fresh coffee purchases remained below 45% in every city. Sydney had the highest percentage at around 44%, while Melbourne stood at 43%. Hobart recorded approximately 38%, whereas Brisbane and Adelaide had the lowest figures, both at about 34%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and selected relevant data points to support your descriptions. By categorizing the data into three distinct sections (café visits, instant coffee, and fresh coffee), you have organized the information logically. The comparisons made between cities, such as noting that Melbourne had the highest café attendance while Sydney led in fresh coffee purchases, are accurate and well-integrated. The response covers all requirements of the prompt, providing a comprehensive summary of the provided chart without unnecessary detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific category, which helps the reader follow the comparison easily. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In terms of', 'By contrast', and 'whereas', to link sentences and clauses. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sets. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between the different cities and their habits is clearly established throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have demonstrated a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic report. Phrases like 'recorded the highest figure', 'proportions of people', and 'remained below' show a good command of language. The vocabulary is precise and used accurately to describe statistical trends. While the range is sufficient and effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms for 'popular' or 'highest' could elevate the response further. Overall, the lexical control is strong, and there are no errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response displays a high level of grammatical accuracy. You have used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively, such as the use of subordinate clauses in 'Adelaide was the only city where the proportions of people visiting cafés and purchasing instant coffee were almost identical.' Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no significant errors in tense or subject-verb agreement. The writing is clear and professional, with the majority of sentences being error-free, which is consistent with a high band score.
