Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates the data of a survey that was completed in five different cities of Australia among people who went to a cafe for coffee, people who purchased fresh coffee, and people who bought instant coffee in the last 4 weeks.
Overall, it is evident that visiting the cafe was the most popular choice among the Australian people, whilst purchasing fresh coffee was the least common choice among the people. Also, buying instant coffee was more prevalent in Australian cities in the last 4 weeks than buying fresh coffee.
Cafe visitors reported the highest percentage in Melbourne and Hobart, between 60-65%. While Sydney was the second most common preference for coffee visitors showing around 62%, moreover Brisbane, and Adelaide accounted for around 55%, and 49% respectively.
While making a comparison, instant coffee buyers were more common than fresh coffee buyers. The highest percentage of instant coffee purchasers were seen in Brisbane and Hobart demonstrating percentages between 50 to 55%. Additionally, buyers in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide recorded the figures of around 46%, 48%, and 50% respectively, On the other hand, fresh coffee was the least preferred option in these cities recording its maximum percentage of over 40% in Sydney and the lowest figure in Adelaide.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the main trends. You have successfully identified the key features, such as the popularity of cafe visits compared to fresh coffee purchases. However, the data reporting is slightly inconsistent; for instance, you mention Sydney's cafe visitors were 'around 62%', but the chart shows a different figure. Additionally, the comparison between instant and fresh coffee is clear, but some data points are described in ranges (e.g., '50 to 55%') rather than specific values, which limits the precision expected in an Academic Task 1 response. Overall, the information is well-selected and logically grouped.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'While', 'Additionally', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader through the data. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or misused, such as 'While making a comparison' at the start of the final paragraph, which feels a bit forced. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different categories of data. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the referencing of specific cities could be smoother to avoid repetitive sentence structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'prevalent', 'accounted for', and 'demonstrating'. There is some repetition of 'people' and 'buyers', which could be improved by using synonyms like 'consumers', 'individuals', or 'respondents'. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, there are occasional inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'reported the highest percentage' (it would be more natural to say 'recorded the highest figures'). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, but it lacks the sophistication required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'whilst' and 'although' clauses. There are some grammatical errors, such as the comma splice in '...respectively, On the other hand', and minor issues with article usage and prepositions. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Your control over punctuation is generally good, but ensure that you do not use commas where a full stop or semicolon is required to separate independent clauses. Increasing the variety of complex structures would further improve your score.
