Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar graph illustrates the percentage of buying and drinking of coffee and tea in five different cities in Australia for a span of 4 weeks.
Overall, the percentage of city residents who went to the café for coffee or tea was significantly higher for all the cites except Adelaide. Additionally, more people bought instant coffee rather than fresh coffee in all cities.
In Melbourne, 64% of the residents went to the café which was the highest among all. Similarly, 63% of the residents in Hobart went to the café followed by Sydney with a percentage of 61% and Brisbane with 56% which was 7% more than Adelaide.
Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide had 45% to 50% of the residents who preferred to get instant coffee, whereas, Brisbane and Hobart had 50-55 percent.
Brisbane and Adelaide had the lowest number of residents consuming fresh coffee with a percentage of 33 and 34 percent. On the other hand, Sydney and Melbourne had 40-45 percent while Hobart had 37% of the people buying fresh coffee.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the main trends. You successfully identified the key features, such as the popularity of café visits compared to home consumption and the preference for instant coffee. However, the report could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the cities rather than listing data for each one individually. For example, instead of stating percentages for each city in separate paragraphs, grouping them by category (café, instant, fresh) would allow for a more analytical approach. The data is generally accurate, though the inclusion of specific percentages for every city can sometimes make the text feel like a list rather than a summary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Overall,' 'Similarly,' and 'On the other hand.' However, the transition between the third and fourth paragraphs is slightly abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow could be enhanced by using more sophisticated linking phrases to connect the data points. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are a bit repetitive in their structure, which slightly impacts the overall cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrates,' 'significantly higher,' and 'consuming.' There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, but some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'percentage of buying and drinking of coffee.' A more natural phrasing would be 'the percentage of people who bought and drank coffee.' The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, but to reach a higher band, you should focus on more precise collocations and varied ways to describe statistical trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most sentences are clear, there are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the percentage of city residents who went to the café... was significantly higher for all the cites except Adelaide' (should be 'cities'). Additionally, 'Brisbane and Hobart had 50-55 percent' lacks a subject-verb agreement or a more formal structure. Punctuation is generally accurate, but there is a tendency to rely on simple sentence patterns. Increasing the variety of complex structures would improve the score in this criterion.
