IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the results of a survey about people’s coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
well according to survey about peoples coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities increase with time. In last 4 weeks in Sydney people bought almost 45% fresh coffee and 46% bought instant coffee but surprisingly 60%+ people went to a cafe for coffee or tea in last 4 weeks because nowadays people priorities their comfort. When they go for a office they just buy coffee because this is much easier comparatively making coffee own self. In other cities like melbourne, brisbane, adelaide, hobart, there are also people went to a cafe for coffee or tea instead of bought fresh coffee or bought instant coffee but in melbourne the ratio of people went to a cafe for coffee or tea is high comparatively other major 3 citites. In adeline the ratio of bought instand coffee and went a cafe for coffee or tea in almost equal but the surveys tells people prefer bought instant coffee slight high than went a cafe for a coffee or tea.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the data but fails to provide a clear overview or a logical structure. While it mentions specific cities and categories, the reporting is inconsistent and lacks a clear comparison of the main trends. The student includes personal opinions, such as 'nowadays people priorities their comfort,' which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report. Furthermore, the data interpretation is somewhat inaccurate, and the response lacks a cohesive summary of the key features across all five cities. To improve, focus on identifying the highest and lowest values and grouping the data logically rather than listing individual points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response lacks paragraphing, which makes it difficult to follow. There is no clear logical progression; the text jumps between cities and categories without a structured approach. Cohesive devices are either missing or used incorrectly, such as the repetitive use of 'and' and 'but' to connect ideas. The referencing is also unclear, particularly when comparing cities. To achieve a higher band, you must organize your response into distinct paragraphs (e.g., an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs for specific comparisons) and use a wider range of linking words to connect your ideas more effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'people bought' and 'went to a cafe' are used repeatedly. There are also several errors in word form and collocation, such as 'instead of bought fresh coffee' (should be 'instead of buying') and 'the ratio of bought instand coffee' (should be 'the proportion of people who bought instant coffee'). The spelling of 'instand' and 'adeline' (Adelaide) also detracts from the quality. To improve, aim to use a more varied range of vocabulary related to data description, such as 'proportion,' 'percentage,' 'majority,' and 'minority,' and ensure correct word forms are used.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and sentence structure. For example, 'there are also people went to a cafe' is grammatically incorrect, as is 'the surveys tells people prefer bought instant coffee.' The sentence structures are mostly simple or contain errors when attempting complexity. Punctuation is also lacking, with a general absence of commas to separate clauses. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring that verbs match their subjects, and using correct tenses when describing data.
