IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the results of a survey about people’s coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given bar graph depicts the information about a survey on the purchase of tea and coffee and consumption in the last 4 weeks by individuals in percentage among 5 Australian cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart.

Overall, the highest proportion is held by people who visited a cafe in Melbourne (64%) in the previous 4 weeks followed by Hobart (63%) for drinking tea or coffee. The least is observed in Brisbane for the purchase of fresh coffee with a figure of 34%. However purchase of fresh coffee is always less than 45% among all the 5 cities. It is evident from the chart that Brisbane and Adelaide are the only cities which purchased 50% instant coffee over the past 4 weeks.

Nevertheless individuals show a substantial interest in visiting cafes to have tea or coffee. This trend is observed in all the cities. The second position is seen in the purchase of instant coffee and lowest in buying fresh coffee. It is noticeable from the graph that the number of residents who purchased fresh coffee remained the same in Brisbane and Adelaide.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers the main features of the data well. You have identified the highest and lowest points and made relevant comparisons between the cities. However, the analysis could be improved by grouping the data more logically. For instance, you mention that fresh coffee purchase is always less than 45%, which is a good analytical observation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurately described; for example, your claim that Brisbane and Adelaide are the only cities that purchased 50% instant coffee is slightly confusing, as the chart shows these two cities at exactly 50%, while others are higher or lower. Overall, the response provides a clear overview and highlights key trends effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and supporting details. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the summary from the specific data points. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Nevertheless', and 'It is evident from' are used to link ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary the sentence structure further to connect the comparisons more fluidly. The progression of ideas is clear, and the reader can easily follow the comparison between the five cities and the three categories of coffee/tea habits.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'highest proportion', 'substantial interest', and 'it is noticeable' are appropriate for a report. There are some minor issues with collocation and precision, such as 'in percentage among 5 Australian cities', which could be phrased more naturally. You have successfully avoided repetitive language by using synonyms for 'purchase' and 'drinking'. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations related to data interpretation, such as 'marginal difference' or 'a significant disparity'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and easy to understand, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are occasional minor errors, such as 'depicts the information about a survey on the purchase of tea and coffee and consumption', which is slightly clunky. Additionally, 'the second position is seen in the purchase of instant coffee' is a bit awkward. You have good control over punctuation and sentence boundaries. To improve, focus on refining complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free and enhance the sophistication of your writing.
