IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the results of a survey about people’s coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given bar graph depicts the information about a survey on the purchase of tea and coffee and consumption in the last 4 weeks by individuals in percentage among 5 Australian cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart.
Overall, the highest proportion is held by people who visited a cafe in Melbourne (64%) in the previous 4 weeks followed by Hobart (63%) for drinking tea or coffee. The least is observed in Brisbane for the purchase of fresh coffee with a figure of 34%. However the purchase of fresh coffee is always less than 45% among all the 5 cities. It is evident from the chart that Brisbane and Adelaide are the only cities which purchased 50% instant coffee over the past 4 weeks.
Nevertheless, individuals show a substantial interest in visiting cafes to have tea or coffee. This trend is observed in all the cities. The second position is seen in the purchase of instant coffee and lowest in buying fresh coffee. It is noticeable from the graph that the number of residents who purchased fresh coffee remained the same in Brisbane and Adelaide.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons. You successfully highlighted the highest and lowest figures, such as the cafe visits in Melbourne and fresh coffee purchases in Brisbane. However, the analysis could be improved by grouping the data more logically rather than listing individual figures. For instance, comparing the three categories (cafe visits, instant coffee, fresh coffee) across all cities would provide a more cohesive overview. While the main trends are identified, some comparisons are slightly imprecise, such as the claim that fresh coffee is 'always less than 45%' when the data shows some cities are quite close to this threshold. Overall, the response provides a clear summary of the key information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and supporting paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the general trends from specific details. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'Nevertheless' are used to guide the reader through the information. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. For example, the shift between the second and third paragraphs could be more fluid. Referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the data points could be strengthened by using more varied linking phrases to compare the cities more effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'substantial interest', and 'evident'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items. For example, instead of saying 'the highest proportion is held by people', you could use 'the highest percentage of residents was recorded in...'. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choices are generally appropriate for an academic report, though they remain somewhat repetitive in structure.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and easy to follow, and grammatical errors are infrequent. You demonstrate control over basic structures, and the punctuation is generally accurate. However, there are minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'in percentage among 5 Australian cities'. To improve, try to vary your sentence beginnings and use more complex subordinate clauses to describe the data trends. Despite these minor slips, your grammar does not impede communication and shows a reasonable level of accuracy.
