Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the task achievement score. While the report attempts to summarize the main features of the chart, the analysis is somewhat fragmented and lacks a clear, cohesive overview. The student identifies some data points, such as the percentages for cafe visits in Melbourne and Hobart, but the comparison between cities and categories is underdeveloped. Furthermore, the response contains inaccuracies in data interpretation and lacks a professional tone. To improve, ensure all parts of the prompt are addressed with sufficient detail and provide a more structured comparison of the data trends rather than just listing isolated figures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks a clear logical progression. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the transitions between sentences are mechanical and often confusing. For example, the phrase 'start from chart' is an unnatural way to introduce data. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes inaccurate, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison of the five cities. The lack of clear signposting between the overview and the supporting details hinders the overall flow. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus, moving logically from general trends to specific data points.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary range is quite limited and repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'result information' instead of 'survey results' and 'fresh bought coffee' instead of 'fresh coffee purchased'. The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe the data, relying on basic descriptors like 'maximum' and 'lower'. Spelling errors, such as 'approximatlly', also detract from the quality of the writing. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'fluctuated', 'exceeded', and 'a significant majority'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The grammatical range is restricted, consisting mostly of simple sentence structures with frequent errors. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the chart illustrated' should be 'illustrates'), article usage, and prepositional errors. Many sentences are fragmented or lack necessary verbs, such as 'maximum increase in Melbourne and Adelaide than others'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with irregular spacing and capitalization. The frequent errors often impede the clarity of the information being presented. To improve, the student needs to focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and practice using complex structures like relative clauses or comparative forms correctly.
