Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the three categories and comparing the five cities. However, the overview is poorly constructed and confusingly phrased, making it difficult to grasp the main trends immediately. While you have included data for all cities, the reporting is somewhat repetitive and lacks a clear analytical focus. To improve, ensure your overview highlights the most significant differences or similarities rather than just listing data points. The comparison between cities is present, but it could be more effectively synthesised to show the 'big picture' rather than just describing each city in isolation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the flow between sentences is often mechanical and repetitive. You rely heavily on simple structures like 'In [City] people who...' which makes the progression feel list-like rather than analytical. There is a lack of varied cohesive devices to link ideas smoothly. For example, the transition between the description of Melbourne and Brisbane is abrupt. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'In contrast,' 'Conversely,' 'Similarly') and ensure that your referencing (e.g., 'the former,' 'the latter') is used to avoid repeating the same nouns.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. You frequently use the same phrases such as 'people who bought' and 'went to a cafe'. There are also some errors in word choice, such as 'brought' instead of 'bought' throughout the text. To improve, you should aim to use more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'proportion,' 'percentage,' 'figure,' or 'trend,' and avoid repeating the same verbs. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated synonyms will help demonstrate a better command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include incorrect article usage ('the adelaide people'), subject-verb agreement, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'had slight above 45%'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences lacking proper structure. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic errors like verb tense consistency and ensuring that your sentences have a clear subject and verb.
