Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the task by identifying the main features of the chart, such as the popularity of cafes and instant coffee. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial and lacks precision. For instance, the report mentions 'Melbourne is above all' and 'Hobart is second highest' without referencing the actual data points or percentages, which is essential for a Task 1 response. Furthermore, the comparison between cities is vague, and the conclusion introduces subjective commentary about city population that is not supported by the provided data. To improve, you should focus on selecting key data points to support your observations and ensure all comparisons are grounded in the provided figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the flow of ideas is often disjointed due to limited use of cohesive devices. Phrases like 'On the least side' and 'In culclusion' are used, but the logical progression between sentences is weak. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as when you mention 'the chart' repeatedly rather than using pronouns or synonyms to link ideas. To achieve a higher band, focus on using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'in contrast', 'similarly') to connect your observations more fluidly and improve the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. You frequently use simple terms like 'highest', 'second', and 'number of people'. There are also some errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'habbits' instead of 'habits', 'culclusion' instead of 'conclusion', and 'thrird' instead of 'third'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'significant', 'marginal', or 'predominant'. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and adverbs will help you convey the information with greater accuracy and sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'The highest number of number of people are, who went to a cafe' and 'chart is showing cities and peoples buying habbits'. There are also issues with article usage ('on the horizontal axis chart') and subject-verb agreement. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like pluralisation and verb tense consistency would be highly beneficial.
