Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates the number of people who bought coffee or tea and it also shows their drinking habits across five different cities of Australia. Overall, the number of people who went to a cafe dominate across four cities except Adelaid where instant coffee consumers were more in number. People who bought fresh coffee were less than others across all five cities. In Sydney, people who went to a cafe for coffee or tea were slightly above 60% followed by instant coffee consumers at 45% while, people who bought fresh coffee were just below 45%. However, these numbers increased in Melbourne to approximately 64% for those who went to a cafe and rised to almost 48% for customers of instant coffee while slightly fell for fresh coffee consumers. In Brisbane number of fresh coffee consumers further fell to approximately 35% and remained same in Adelaid. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task and identifies key trends across the five cities. You successfully highlight the dominance of cafe visits and the lower popularity of fresh coffee. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by some inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, stating that cafe visits in Brisbane 'fell to 55%' while instant coffee reached 'more than 50%' is slightly confusing when compared to the visual data. Additionally, the overview is a bit simplistic. To reach a higher band, ensure that comparisons are more precise and that the overview clearly synthesizes the most significant differences rather than just listing trends city by city.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'while' to connect ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel repetitive. The paragraphing is generally appropriate, but the transition between the general overview and the specific city data could be smoother. Referencing is mostly clear, though some sentences are slightly dense, making it harder to follow the progression of the data comparisons. Improving the variety of linking phrases would enhance the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrates', 'consumers', and 'approximately'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'rised' (should be 'rose') and 'Adelaid' (spelling error). While you attempt to use varied vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and some phrasing is repetitive (e.g., 'number of people who...'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of proper nouns and verbs.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the number of people... dominate' should be 'dominates') and incorrect verb forms ('rised' instead of 'rose'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some missing commas in complex sentences that affect readability. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on consistent verb tense usage and subject-verb agreement will significantly improve your accuracy.
