Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all parts of the task. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the popularity of café visits across the cities and the comparative data for coffee types. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the trends. You have made relevant comparisons, such as noting that Hobart had the highest proportion of instant coffee drinkers while Melbourne led in café visits. The data is accurately reported and supports your points well. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently highlight the most significant differences rather than listing figures for every city, which can sometimes feel like a mechanical report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the overview from the detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'however', and 'in contrast' are used appropriately to link information. The flow between sentences is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. The structure is well-managed, making the information easy to follow. There is a good balance between general statements and specific data points, which contributes to the overall coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information accurately. Phrases like 'highest proportion', 'recorded the largest percentage', and 'stood at' are appropriate for an academic report. While the vocabulary is functional and precise, it is mostly standard. To improve, you could incorporate more varied synonyms for 'bought' or 'visited' to demonstrate a wider range of lexical flexibility. The spelling is accurate throughout, and there are no instances where word choice impedes communication or causes confusion for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. You have used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'Hobart had the highest proportion of people who bought instant coffee, whereas Melbourne recorded the largest percentage of café visitors.' Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence structures are varied enough to maintain interest. There are very few errors, and those present do not affect the clarity of the report. The use of comparative structures is particularly effective for this task type.
