Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the chart, such as the highest and lowest values in specific categories. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial and lacks a clear, cohesive summary of the data. While you identify some key figures, the reporting is occasionally inaccurate or confusing, such as the claim that instant coffee was highest in Hobart without providing the specific data point. To improve, ensure that all comparisons are clearly linked to the data provided and avoid vague phrasing like 'collection of data'. The overview is present but could be more effectively integrated to highlight the most significant trends across the five cities.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the logical progression between sentences is often weak. Some transitions, such as 'Furthermore' and 'However', are used, but they do not always connect the ideas logically. For instance, the transition between the discussion of fresh coffee and cafe visits is abrupt. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to track which city or category is being discussed. Improving the use of cohesive devices and ensuring each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would significantly enhance the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it is quite repetitive and lacks precision. You frequently use basic phrases like 'the number of residents' and 'the percentage of people'. There are also some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'collection of data' instead of 'survey results' and 'maximum fresh coffee purchased' instead of 'the highest proportion of fresh coffee'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied and precise vocabulary related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'trend', 'fluctuation', or 'predominant'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede clarity. Many sentences lack necessary verbs or articles, such as 'maximum fresh coffee purchased in Sydney around 44%' (should be 'was around 44%') and 'a very small Australians' (should be 'a very small percentage of Australians'). Sentence structures are often simple, and attempts at more complex sentences are frequently faulty. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that every sentence contains a main verb. Proofreading for basic articles and prepositions will also help reduce the frequency of these errors.
