Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the score. While you attempt to describe the data, the analysis is superficial and lacks precision. You mention 'Sydney is the capital of Australia,' which is factually incorrect and irrelevant to the data provided. Furthermore, the description of the trends is vague; for instance, stating that the ratio of instant coffee is 'similar in all cities' does not accurately reflect the specific data points shown in the chart. To improve, you must focus on reporting key figures and making accurate comparisons rather than making general statements or external assumptions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay uses basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Thirdly' to structure the response. However, the logical progression is weak because the ideas within the paragraphs are not clearly connected to the data. The paragraphing is present but the content within the paragraphs lacks a clear focus, making the overall argument difficult to follow. Referencing is also problematic; for example, the phrase 'its ratio is far sufficient' is unclear and does not link back to a specific subject. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. You rely on basic terms like 'people', 'buying', and 'drinking' throughout the text. There are also instances of awkward word choices, such as 'information carried out by survey' and 'ratio is far sufficient', which do not convey the intended meaning accurately. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'consumption', 'fluctuate', or 'significant', and ensure that your collocations are natural and appropriate for an IELTS Academic Task 1 report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'individuals in Australia prefers' (subject-verb agreement error), 'mostly people bought' (incorrect adverb usage), and 'in the Sydney or Melbourne' (incorrect article usage). The sentence structures are mostly simple or contain errors when attempting more complex constructions. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring that your sentence structures are grammatically sound. Proofreading for these common errors before finishing your task will help improve your accuracy significantly.
