Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making comparisons across the five cities. However, the overview is somewhat vague; phrases like 'habits of going for any sorts of drinks is the highest' are unclear and do not accurately reflect the data provided. While the key features are highlighted, the analysis lacks a clear, cohesive summary of the trends. The data points are generally accurate, but the interpretation of the 'overall' trend could be more precise to reach a higher band. The response effectively selects and reports the main features as required by the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'As result' (missing 'a') and 'Consequently' used to introduce a point that is not a direct logical consequence of the previous paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be smoother to ensure a more professional academic tone.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, but it is somewhat repetitive and lacks precision. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'stable condition' to describe a trend, and 'buying tendency' which is not the most natural collocation. Spelling errors like 'birsbane' and 'Malbourne' are present, which detract from the overall quality. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary, the control is inconsistent. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of proper nouns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('in five cities people'), incorrect verb forms ('survey that conducted'), and prepositional errors ('in compare to'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. The student demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but the accuracy is not consistent, which limits the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage would significantly improve the clarity of the writing.
