Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The bar chart illustrates the percentages of residents in five Australian cities who bought fresh coffee, purchased instant coffee, or went to a café for coffee or tea during the previous four weeks.

Overall, visiting a café was the most popular activity in four of the five cities, with Melbourne and Hobart recording the highest proportions, at approximately 63%. By contrast, buying fresh coffee was consistently the least common choice. Adelaide was the only city where café visits and instant-coffee purchases were equally popular, at around 50%.

In Sydney, approximately 44% of residents purchased fresh coffee, while around 46% bought instant coffee; however, more than 60% went to a café. Melbourne showed a similar pattern, with figures of roughly 43%, 48%, and 63%, respectively. In Brisbane, fresh-coffee purchases accounted for only about 34%, compared with approximately 53% for instant coffee and 56% for café visits.

Adelaide recorded around 35% for fresh-coffee purchases, while both instant-coffee purchases and café visits stood at approximately 50%. In Hobart, the corresponding figures were about 38%, 54%, and 63%. Thus, café attendance was particularly prevalent in Melbourne and Hobart, whereas Brisbane had the lowest proportion of fresh-coffee buyers among all five cities.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases such as 'consistently the least common choice', 'accounted for', and 'particularly prevalent' demonstrate a good command of language.
