Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the three categories and comparing the five cities. The overview is clear and highlights the main trends effectively. However, the data reporting is somewhat inconsistent; for instance, the description of Brisbane and Adelaide is slightly confusing, as the term 'drinking habits' is used vaguely rather than referring specifically to the categories provided. While the main features are selected, the analysis could be more precise in its comparisons between cities to reach a higher band. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt adequately.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs for each city. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'however', and 'in contrast' are used to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by mechanical phrasing, such as the repetitive use of 'the people who' or 'the percentage of people'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group the cities, which helps the reader follow the comparison. To improve, the writer should vary the transition signals and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'the habits of drinking') is more specific to the data provided.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe trends and percentages. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'dramatically' and 'moderately', which add precision. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'drinking habits fell down' or 'rates of people going to coffee'. These do not impede communication but show a lack of sophisticated control. The range is sufficient to convey the necessary information, but more precise terminology related to survey data would enhance the quality of the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('in the Hobart', 'to sydney's population') and preposition usage. Some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'the largest numbers of people went to cafe to drink coffee or tea was around 62%'. Despite these errors, the meaning is generally clear and the reader is not significantly hindered. Increasing the accuracy of subject-verb agreement and article usage would help elevate the score.
