Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar graph compares the results of a survey regarding the way people choose to consume their coffee and tea across five different cities in Australia.
Overall, the percentage of people going to cafés accounts for the largest share of residents in four out of five cities, besides Adelaide where the number of people purchasing instant coffee was slightly higher. Conversely, the number of residents buying fresh coffee in the last 4 weeks has been consistently the lowest.
Looking at Sydney, café goers accounted for 61% of the residents while 45% gave given their preference to instant coffee and with just a marginal difference, only 44% bought fresh coffee. The results are relatively similar in Melbourne with just a bit of increase in the number of cafés and instant coffee, at 64% and 49% respectively. In contrast, the number of fresh coffee purchases is slightly lower in Melbourne, standing at 42%.
Brisbane and Adelaide had noticeably lower rates of fresh coffee purchases, both around 34-35%, although their instant coffee figures (53% and 50% respectively) and café visits (56% and roughly 50%) were closer together than in the other cities. Hobart followed a pattern more similar to Sydney and Melbourne, with 39% buying fresh coffee, nearly 55% buying instant coffee, and 63% visiting a café.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all parts of the task. You have successfully identified the main features and provided relevant comparisons across the five cities. The overview is clear and highlights the key trends, such as the general preference for cafés and the consistently lower figures for fresh coffee. Data is used accurately to support the descriptions, and the comparisons between cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane are well-integrated. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are clearly linked to the specific categories mentioned in the prompt to avoid any ambiguity.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Conversely', 'In contrast', and 'while' to link sentences and paragraphs effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. The flow of information is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. The structure is coherent, making the information easy to follow for the reader.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision, such as 'accounts for the largest share', 'consistently', and 'marginal difference'. There is a good awareness of style and collocation, which is appropriate for an academic report. While the vocabulary is accurate and functional, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common lexical items related to data trends (e.g., 'predominant', 'marginal', 'fluctuate') would further enhance the lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'The bar graph compares...' and 'Brisbane and Adelaide had noticeably lower rates...'. There are very few errors, and those present (e.g., 'gave given their preference') are minor slips that do not impede communication. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence construction is varied enough to maintain interest and clarity throughout the report.
