Student answer (Band 6.5)
The The chart shows information about coffee and tea buying and drinking habits of people in five cities in Australia. Overall, it can be seen that going to a café was the most common activity in most cities, and buying fresh coffee was generally the least common.
In Sydney, about 43% of people bought fresh coffee, while 46% bought instant coffee. A higher number, 61%, went to a café for coffee or tea. Similarly, in Melbourne, 42% bought fresh coffee and 48% bought instant coffee, but the figure for going to a café was much higher, at 64%, which was the highest among all five cities.
In Brisbane, only 34% of people bought fresh coffee, which was one of the lowest figures. However, 53% bought instant coffee, and 56% went to a café. Adelaide had a similar pattern, with 35% buying fresh coffee, 50% buying instant coffee, and 50% going to a café.
Finally, in Hobart, 39% bought fresh coffee, 55% bought instant coffee, and 63% went to a café, which was one of the highest figures for that category.
In conclusion, café visits were generally more popular than buying coffee at home in all five cities..

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided a clear overview. You covered all five cities and included relevant comparisons, such as noting that Melbourne had the highest café attendance and Brisbane had the lowest fresh coffee consumption. The data is accurately reported, and the response is well-structured to highlight the key trends. To reach a higher band, ensure that you not only report the figures but also synthesize the information more effectively by grouping the cities based on their similarities or contrasting them more sharply, rather than listing them city-by-city in separate paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect or group of cities, which helps the reader follow the information easily. You used some cohesive devices like 'Similarly', 'However', and 'Finally' to link your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking phrases to connect the sentences within paragraphs more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the data, such as 'buying and drinking habits', 'most common activity', and 'lowest figures'. The language is generally accurate and appropriate for an academic report. To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms or collocations to avoid repetition. For example, instead of repeating 'bought' or 'figures', you could use terms like 'purchased', 'consumed', 'proportions', or 'percentages'. The current vocabulary is functional and clear, but lacks the sophistication required for the higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
Your grammar is generally strong, and you have used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly. There is a minor typo in the first sentence ('The The'), but this does not impede communication. You demonstrate good control over sentence construction, which allows for clear expression of the data. To aim for a higher score, try to incorporate more varied complex structures, such as using participle clauses or passive voice to describe the trends more dynamically.
