Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the chart, identifying the trends for coffee and tea consumption across the five cities. However, the reporting of data is inconsistent and occasionally inaccurate. For instance, the claim that 'instant coffee is quite popular among Adelaide about 50%' is not clearly supported by the visual data, and the comparison of 'fresh coffee' trends is vague. While the overview is present, the lack of precision in reporting figures and the omission of some clear comparisons between the categories (cafe vs. instant vs. fresh) limits the development of the response. To improve, ensure that all data points mentioned are accurate and that comparisons are explicitly linked to the provided figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused. Phrases like 'At a fleeting glance' and 'Moving further' are used to transition, but they do not always fit the context of the data analysis. Additionally, there are issues with referencing; for example, the sentence 'Remaining Sydney and Melbourne ranging from 40% to 45% percent respectively' is grammatically disjointed and lacks a clear connection to the previous clause. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words will help the flow of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision. There are several spelling errors ('caliberated', 'significiant', 'hobert', 'estimately') and awkward word choices, such as 'estimately similar 53%ratio'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more precise terminology for describing trends (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'accounted for', 'a significant proportion') and ensure that spelling is accurate, as these errors occasionally distract the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include missing articles ('in cafe'), incorrect verb forms ('represent' instead of 'represents'), and punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after commas and periods. The sentence structure is often fragmented, which hinders readability. For example, 'In brisbane the number is above 55%,and in hobert it is similar as melbourne as 63% estimately.' requires better control of syntax and punctuation to be considered clear and accurate. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement is essential.
