Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the data, but it lacks a clear overview or summary of the trends. The information is presented as a list of city-by-city statistics rather than a comparative analysis. The student incorrectly refers to cities as 'countries' and 'production' centers, which shows a misunderstanding of the data. While the figures are generally accurate, the lack of synthesis and the failure to highlight significant differences or groupings (e.g., comparing the highest and lowest figures across all cities) limits the score. To improve, you must provide a clear summary paragraph that identifies the most striking trends before detailing specific data points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is poorly structured. It lacks a clear introduction and a concluding summary. The paragraphing is inconsistent, with the final paragraph being fragmented and incomplete. The use of cohesive devices is repetitive and mechanical; the word 'whereas' is used excessively to link every clause, which makes the text feel monotonous and difficult to follow. There is no logical progression between the cities, and the referencing is sometimes unclear. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus rather than just listing data points sequentially.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. The student relies heavily on basic phrases like 'bought fresh coffee' and 'went to a cafe'. There are also significant errors in word choice, such as referring to Australian cities as 'countries' and incorrectly using the term 'production of coffee' to describe consumer habits. The repetition of 'citizens' and 'individuals' also suggests a limited range. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise vocabulary related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'percentage', 'majority', 'minority', and 'fluctuated'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding punctuation and sentence structure. Many sentences are run-on or lack proper capitalization, such as 'In sydney 43%...'. There is a lack of variety in sentence structures, with most sentences following a simple 'subject-verb-object' pattern. Additionally, there are errors in subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. The final paragraph is particularly problematic, as it is incomplete and lacks proper sentence boundaries. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence punctuation and attempt to use more complex structures, such as relative clauses or participial phrases, to combine related ideas.
