Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student provides a clear overview of the survey results, mentioning the five cities and their coffee and tea consumption habits. However, the response lacks specific data to support the claims, such as exact percentages. The discussion of coffee and tea consumption compares cities but is vague and not fully developed. It would benefit from more quantitative data and clearer comparisons to fully meet the task requirements. Overall, while the ideas are present, more detail and clarity are needed for a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The structure of the response is basic, with an introduction, an overview, and detailed comparisons. However, the comparison points are not always clear, especially in phrases like 'additionally sees a decline in purchasing,' which can confuse readers. Some sentences are lengthy and convoluted, affecting coherence. More effective use of linking words and phrases would enhance the logical flow between sentences. Overall, coherence could be improved by clearer organization and transitions between ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate but lacks precision in some areas. Words like 'higher' and 'lesser' are rather basic for an academic context and could be replaced with more appropriate terms. The use of 'little more' is vague and should be expressed in terms of specific quantities. There are some instances of repetition (e.g., 'purchasing of fresh coffee'), which can be improved by varying the language. More sophisticated vocabulary would enhance the academic nature of the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

Grammatical accuracy is a concern, with several errors present, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart has...') and awkward phrasing ('the purchasing of instant coffee is on second position'). There are also run-on sentences that make comprehension difficult. While attempts at complex structures are present, they often result in grammatical errors, affecting clarity. The use of punctuation also needs attention to improve sentence separation and readability.

Overall feedback

The student's response demonstrates an understanding of the task, discussing coffee and tea consumption habits across several Australian cities. However, improvements are needed in several areas. To enhance Task Achievement, specific data points should be incorporated to support claims. In terms of Coherence and Cohesion, clearer connections and structured organization are necessary for better flow. For Lexical Resource, it would be beneficial to expand vocabulary use to sound more academic. Lastly, grammatical accuracy requires serious attention to reduce errors and improve clarity. Overall, with focused revisions, the response has the potential to reach a higher band score.
