Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the data but struggles with clarity and accuracy. While you identify some main features, the reporting of figures is often confusing or incorrect, such as the claim that Hobart had the highest share for coffee/tea in cafes at 63% and the contradictory statements regarding instant coffee. The overview is poorly defined, and the selection of data points lacks a logical focus. To improve, ensure you clearly distinguish between the three categories (cafe, instant, fresh) and accurately report the data for each city. You need to provide a more cohesive summary of the trends rather than listing isolated, sometimes inaccurate, figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes misused, such as 'On the one hand' without a corresponding 'On the other hand'. Referencing is frequently unclear, particularly in sentences like 'Who people bought instant coffee in last 4 weeks', which lacks a clear subject or logical connection to the previous sentence. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs is weak, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the five cities.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You rely heavily on basic phrasing such as 'highest share', 'lowest percentage', and 'bought instant coffee'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'consequences of a survey' (instead of 'results') and 'their people liked to buy free coffee' (which is unclear). To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'proportion', 'majority', 'minority', 'fluctuated', or 'remained stable', and ensure that your word choices are contextually appropriate for a formal report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with sentence structure, such as fragments ('Who people bought instant coffee in last 4 weeks') and awkward phrasing ('Hobart city recorded the highest share in Australia, who people like to visit cafe'). Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent. While you attempt some complex structures, they are often faulty, leading to a lack of clarity. Focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and proofreading for common errors like missing articles or incorrect preposition usage.
