Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the task by identifying key features, such as the popularity of fresh coffee compared to instant coffee and café visits. However, the analysis is hampered by significant inaccuracies in interpreting the data. For instance, the claim that there was a 'notable increase' in buying instant coffee is not supported by the static nature of the chart, and the statement that fresh coffee buying is greater in all countries except Adelaide is factually incorrect based on the provided data. Furthermore, the summary lacks a clear, accurate overview of the trends. The information is presented in a somewhat disjointed manner, making it difficult for the reader to grasp the main comparisons effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical flow is frequently interrupted by awkward phrasing and unclear referencing. For example, the transition 'Other remaining aspects of to go out to café' is confusing and lacks a clear connection to the previous paragraph. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical or misused, such as the abrupt shift in the final paragraph. The progression of ideas is not always smooth, and the lack of clarity in sentence structure makes the overall argument difficult to follow at times.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often imprecise, which occasionally impedes communication. Phrases like 'outcomes of a research' and 'ratio number of buying' are unnatural and demonstrate a lack of control over collocations. There is also repetitive use of basic terms such as 'buying' and 'coffee'. While the student attempts to use some descriptive language, the word choice is frequently inaccurate, such as 'steadily decline saw' instead of 'a steady decline was seen'. To improve, the student needs to focus on more precise terminology and natural word combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a high frequency of grammatical errors that often distract the reader. There are persistent issues with subject-verb agreement, article usage, and sentence structure (e.g., 'There countries, Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart were included just above the 60%'). The attempt at complex sentences often results in errors, such as 'with started around 45% in Sydney to just below 55% in Hobart'. While the meaning is generally discernible, the lack of control over basic grammar and punctuation significantly limits the clarity of the report.
