Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the findings of a survey about the percentage of coffee and tea bought by people and their drinking habits in last four weeks in five Australian cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart).

Overall, Most of the people spent money when they go to a cafe for coffee or tea while fewer people spent money on purchasing fresh coffee in all five cities of Australia. People buying instant coffee remained second highest.

Above 60% of city residents went to cafe for drinking coffee or tea in Sydney showing the highest percentage, Hobart and Melbourne while Brisbane and Adelaide had at least 35% of citizens buying fresh coffee, remaining at the lowest in proportion.

In Adelaide, almost 50% people go to cafes and bought instant coffee. Whereas, the same trend can be seen in Sydney where roughy 45% people spend money on purchasing fresh and instant coffee. People buying instant coffee in the last month remained between the range of 45% and 55% in five major Australia cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response provides a general overview and attempts to highlight key features. However, the data reporting is inconsistent and occasionally inaccurate. For instance, the claim that 'Brisbane and Adelaide had at least 35% of citizens buying fresh coffee' is vague, and the comparison between cities lacks precision. The summary of the 'cafe' category is somewhat confusingly phrased, and the data points mentioned do not always align clearly with the visual information provided in the chart. To improve, ensure that specific data points are cited accurately and that comparisons are made more systematically across all categories and cities to provide a more comprehensive summary of the main trends.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed. While there are some cohesive devices used, such as 'Overall' and 'Whereas', they are occasionally used in a way that does not fully clarify the relationship between the ideas. The referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly in the third paragraph where the grouping of cities and percentages becomes difficult to follow. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the flow and logical progression of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision required for a higher band. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'people', 'buying', and 'spent money'. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'percentage', 'proportion', and 'residents', the collocation is sometimes awkward, such as 'remaining at the lowest in proportion'. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to use a wider range of vocabulary to describe trends and comparisons, such as 'a significant majority', 'a marginal difference', or 'the lowest proportion recorded'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('a cafe', 'the lowest'), subject-verb agreement ('almost 50% people go'), and prepositional usage. Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'People buying instant coffee remained second highest', which lacks a clear subject or article. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring consistent tense usage would help improve the overall quality of the writing.
