IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the results of a survey about people’s coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart illustrates comsumption habits of coffee and tea by inhabitants of five Austrialian cities, namely, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart.

The most commun habit is buying fresh coffee which is what nearly 65% of Melbourne residents do in last 4 weeks, followed by Hobart with 63%, Sydney with 62% and 56% in Brisbane and below 50% in Adelaide.

Regarding people who bought instant coffee in last 4 weeks, Hobart residents come first with nearly 55%, then Brisbane with 53% and other three cities have less that 50% of individuals who drink coffee.

In relation to people who went to a cafe to drink tea or coffee recently, it is obvious that the percentage is less that the two other habits. In fact, around 43% of people go to a cafe in Sydney and 42% in Melbourne while less than 38% of consumers drink coffee or tea outside their house in Hobart, Adelaide and Brisbane.

To conclude, the majority of resdents living in the five Australian cities got fresh or instant coffe usually. However, fewer people are going to cafe to consume coffee ore tea.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the chart and provided relevant comparisons between the five cities. You covered all three categories (fresh coffee, instant coffee, and cafe visits) and highlighted the key trends. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide a more comprehensive overview in the introduction or conclusion that synthesizes the data rather than just listing facts. For example, noting that fresh coffee is generally more popular than cafe visits across all cities would strengthen your summary. The data points are accurate, but ensure you consistently include all cities in your comparisons to avoid minor omissions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific category of the survey. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Regarding', 'In relation to', and 'To conclude' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences can be a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the transition between the data points feels more natural. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are slightly repetitive in structure. Overall, the information is easy to follow and the progression is logical.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to describe the data, using terms like 'consumption habits', 'inhabitants', and 'residents'. However, there are several spelling errors ('comsumption', 'Austrialian', 'commun', 'resdents', 'coffe', 'ore') that detract from the quality of the writing. While these do not impede communication, they prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure you proofread for basic spelling mistakes. You have attempted some topic-specific vocabulary, which is good, but you need to refine your accuracy to reach the next level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use comparative structures, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'in last 4 weeks' (missing articles), 'less that' (should be 'less than'), and 'got fresh or instant coffe usually' (awkward phrasing). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on the correct use of articles, prepositions, and verb tenses. Increasing the variety of your sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher band score.
