Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar diagram depicts the comparative analysis of buying and drinking habits of people in five Australian cities namely Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart in last 4 weeks.

Among the five cities, nearly 45% people in Sydney bought fresh coffee in last 4 weeks, followed by the people in Melbourne and Hobert, where the percentage of people buying fresh coffe was about 42% and38%, respectively. Dwellers in Brisbane and Adelaide appeared to be less in purchasing fresh coffee, which is below 35%. The habit of getting instant coffee is relatively higher in all of the cities compared to the fresh coffee. In Hobart and Brisbane, almost 54% and 53% inhabitants, respectively, bought instant coffee in last one month. Moreover, half of the Adelaide dwellers relied on instant coffee. However, the percentage of having instant coffee is lower than 50% in case of the people in Sydney and Melbourne.

It is clearly seen that, people were more likely to go to a cafe for having coffee or tea in all cases. The tendency of going out for a drink was higher in Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney, where more than 6o% people went to shop for coffee or tea. Whereas, below 50% individuals in other three cities depended on coffee shops to have their regular drink.

In conclusion, the habit of drinking and buying coffee varies among the people in Australia, however, going to a cafe for coffee and tea was most prevelant in all cities in the given period of time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the main trends. You successfully identified the key features, such as the higher preference for instant coffee over fresh coffee and the general popularity of visiting cafes. The data is accurately reported, and comparisons between the five cities are made effectively. To reach a higher band, ensure that the 'overview' is more distinct and perhaps placed immediately after the introduction to better highlight the main trends before diving into the specific data points. Overall, the information is well-selected and relevant to the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the data. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Among the five cities', 'Moreover', 'However', and 'In conclusion' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the referencing of the cities and data points is clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'comparative analysis', 'prevalent', and 'inhabitants' are used appropriately. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'Hobert' (Hobart) and 'prevelant' (prevalent), and a few awkward collocations like 'less in purchasing'. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise academic collocations would enhance the quality. The range is sufficient for the task, but further variety in describing trends and proportions would help elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, though some errors persist, such as 'in last 4 weeks' (missing 'the') and '6o%' (typo). Some sentences are slightly clunky, for example, 'the percentage of having instant coffee is lower than 50% in case of the people in Sydney'. Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the grammatical control is generally consistent. To improve, focus on article usage and refining complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
