Student answer (Band 7.0)
The graph below displays the results of a survey about people’s coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities in the last 4 weeks.
People from Sydney bought the highest amount of fresh coffee whereas people from Hobart bought the highest amount of instant coffee. The highest percentage of people who would go to a cafe were from Melbourne. Majority of the residents across the five cities preferred to buy instant coffee over fresh coffee.
Almost 45% of the residents of Sydney bought fresh coffee, making it the highest among the five cities. This figure declined to around 42% in Melbourne and further declined to approximately 38% in Hobart. Brisbane and Adelaide had just below 35% of the residents who bought fresh coffee. More than 45% of the residents of Sydney and almost 48% from Melbourne bought instant coffee. Exactly half of the residents od Adelaide bought instant coffee. This figure increased in Brisbane and Hobart to nearly 52% and 54% respectively.
Except Adelaide, more than half of the residents went to a cafe. Nearly 49% of people from Adelaide went to a cafe. This figure rose to over 55% in Brisbane. This further inclined to around 61% in Sydney, then 63% in Hobart to reaching the maximun at 64% in Melbourne.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying key trends and making relevant comparisons across the five cities. You have clearly highlighted the highest and lowest figures for each category, such as noting Sydney's fresh coffee consumption and Melbourne's cafe attendance. The overview provided in the second paragraph effectively captures the main features. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, the claim that 'Majority of the residents across the five cities preferred to buy instant coffee over fresh coffee' is a good analytical summary. The response is well-structured and provides a clear, logical overview of the data presented in the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, a body paragraph for coffee types, and a final paragraph for cafe habits. Cohesive devices are used effectively to link ideas, such as 'whereas', 'further declined', and 'this figure rose to'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of data. The progression of information is clear, moving from general trends to specific city data. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions between sentences could be more varied to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the data, including terms like 'percentage', 'residents', 'declined', and 'maximum'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices could be more precise. For example, 'inclined' is used in a context where 'increased' or 'rose' would be more natural. There are minor errors, such as 'od' instead of 'of' and 'maximun' instead of 'maximum', which are likely slips but should be avoided. To improve, focus on using more varied collocations related to data trends, such as 'a significant proportion' or 'a marginal increase'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have successfully used comparative structures like 'whereas' and 'more than'. While there are some grammatical errors, such as 'Except Adelaide' (should be 'Except for Adelaide') and 'to reaching the maximun' (should be 'reaching the maximum'), these do not impede communication. The control of punctuation is generally good. To achieve a higher band, aim for a wider variety of complex sentence forms and ensure greater accuracy in prepositional phrases and verb forms. The majority of your sentences are clear and error-free, which supports a solid score in this criterion.
