Student answer (Band 7.0)

The chart visualizes the results of a survey about coffee and tea buying and drinking habits among people living across five Australian cities.

Overall, people living in Melbourne visit cafes for coffee or tea more than people in other cities. However in all the given cities except in Adelaide where people prefer instant coffee, most people visit cafes for coffee or tea. Sydney has the most people buying fresh coffee than other cities and Hobart has the most people buying instant coffee among these cities.

About 64% of people living in Melbourne had gone to cafes in last 4 weeks which is the highest figure among the cities, which is followed by about 63% of people from Hobart, around 61% from Sydney and slightly over 55% from Brisbane went to a café. In contrast, Adelaide only had under 50% of people visiting cafes for the same, which was the lowest figure recorded. People in Adelaide preferred buying instant coffee over cafes accounting for about 50%. The percentage of people who bought instant coffee was highest in Hobart at 54%, followed by Brisbane at approximately 53%, Adelaide and then Melbourne at around 48%. The lowest share was of Sydney only accounting for about 45%.

Residents of Sydney contributed to the highest shares in buying fresh coffee at nearly 43%, which was followed by 42% in Melbourne, 38% in Hobart, and the lowest shares were those of Adelaide and Brisbane with only a very small difference. Both had around 34% of people who preferred fresh coffee.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the task well. You have successfully identified the main features, such as Melbourne's high cafe attendance and the contrast between instant and fresh coffee preferences across the five cities. The data is accurately reported and comparisons are made effectively. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview is more distinct and comprehensive; while you have an overview paragraph, it could be more synthesised to highlight the most significant trends rather than just listing city-specific observations. Overall, the information is well-selected and supports the summary effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific category (cafe visits, instant coffee, fresh coffee), which helps the reader follow the information easily. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'followed by', and 'which is' are used appropriately to link sentences and clauses. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different aspects of the data. The flow is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the response, meeting the requirements for a high band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'highest figure recorded', 'contributed to the highest shares', and 'preferred buying' are used effectively. There is some awareness of style and collocation, though the range is somewhat standard. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'buying' or 'people' to avoid repetition and enhance the sophistication of your writing. The current vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There are minor slips, such as 'Sydney has the most people buying fresh coffee than other cities' (should be 'more... than') and 'The lowest share was of Sydney only accounting for about 45%' (slightly awkward phrasing). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede understanding. A wider variety of complex structures would help elevate the score further.
