Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the task by identifying main features and making comparisons. However, the reporting of data is inconsistent and at times confusing. For instance, the statement that Brisbane had the 'lowest percentage of fresh coffee' contradicts the later claim that it 'reached a high of 50%'. The overview is somewhat vague, and the data selection lacks precision. While the main trends are touched upon, the lack of clarity in data interpretation prevents a higher score. To improve, ensure that the data cited directly matches the visual information provided and that comparisons are logically structured to highlight the most significant differences between the cities.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' are used to introduce sections, but the content within these sections does not always follow a logical progression. Additionally, referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the sentence 'the fresh coffee numbers in former was 40% and 35% in latter', where the connection to the previously mentioned cities is slightly awkward. Improving the flow between sentences and using a wider variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it is limited and contains several errors in word choice and collocation. For example, 'oftenly' is not a standard English word, and 'go off in cafe' is an unnatural expression for describing consumer habits. There is also a lack of precision in describing trends; using more varied and accurate terminology for data (e.g., 'proportion', 'percentage', 'figures') would strengthen the response. While the meaning is generally clear, the repetitive nature of the vocabulary and the occasional misuse of terms limit the score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include incorrect verb forms ('remainded'), missing articles ('in cafe'), and subject-verb agreement errors ('Brisbane shared lowest percentage'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before commas and periods. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to distract the reader and indicate a lack of control over complex structures. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
