Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all three categories (fresh coffee, cafe visits, and instant coffee) across the five cities. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical and lacks a cohesive synthesis of the data. While the main features are identified, some comparisons are inaccurate or confusing, such as the claim that Brisbane and Adelaide have the same percentages for cafe visits (53% and 39% are clearly different). The overview is present but could be more analytical by highlighting the most significant trends rather than just listing cities. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are accurately transcribed and that comparisons are logically supported by the provided chart.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often repetitive or mechanical (e.g., 'Lastly', 'On the other hand'). There are instances where the flow is disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'nealy Melbourne also followes the, accounting for 41%'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the progression between sentences could be smoother. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through the data comparison.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety expected at higher bands. There are several spelling errors (e.g., 'Horbart', 'Melbouren', 'Synedy', 'Brisban') and some awkward collocations like 'stand the highest percentages' instead of 'account for the highest percentages'. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary, the range is limited, and the errors occasionally distract the reader. Focusing on accurate spelling and using more sophisticated verbs to describe trends (e.g., 'surpass', 'fluctuate', 'predominate') would significantly enhance the lexical quality of the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('Hobart and Melbouren stands', 'Brisban hold') and missing articles or prepositions. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on basic subject-verb agreement, consistent verb tense usage, and proofreading for common grammatical slips that occur when attempting more complex sentence structures.
