Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the data, such as the popularity of cafe visits in Sydney, Melbourne, and Hobart. However, the report is incomplete. It fails to provide a comprehensive overview of the data for all five cities, particularly regarding the 'fresh coffee' and 'instant coffee' categories for all locations. The information is presented in a somewhat disjointed manner, and the final paragraph is too brief, lacking the necessary detail to fully support the summary. To improve, ensure that all categories are clearly compared across all cities mentioned in the prompt, rather than focusing on isolated data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the logical progression between sentences and paragraphs is weak. For instance, the transition between the discussion of Sydney/Melbourne and the subsequent paragraph about Brisbane is abrupt. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to track which data points belong to which city. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring a smoother flow between ideas would significantly enhance the coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher bands. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'figure', 'percentage', and 'highest'. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary (e.g., 'purchasing', 'residing'), there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'Purchasing instant coffee within the span of a month is a moderate activity'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more varied synonyms and more sophisticated collocations related to data description, such as 'a significant proportion' or 'the most prevalent choice'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The bar graph illustrate', 'the percentage were') and missing articles or prepositions. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent punctuation would lead to immediate improvement.
