Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the score. While you have identified some main features, the overview is weak and lacks a clear summary of the overall trends. The data reporting is inconsistent; for example, you mention 'more than 60%' for cafe visits, but the chart shows varying figures across cities. The comparison between cities is superficial, and some data points are inaccurate or missing. To improve, ensure you provide a clear overview of the main trends and support your points with accurate data from the chart. You must also ensure the response meets the minimum length requirement to avoid a penalty.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a logical structure. The paragraphing is fragmented, with several very short paragraphs that do not allow for a coherent flow of ideas. Cohesive devices are largely absent, making the transition between sentences and ideas feel mechanical and disjointed. For instance, the jump from general cafe visits to specific city data lacks a clear linking phrase. To improve, use transition words such as 'furthermore', 'in contrast', or 'consequently' to connect your ideas. Ensure each paragraph has a clear focus, such as one for the overview and others for detailed comparisons, to improve the overall progression of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic phrases like 'people like to have' and 'people prefer to have'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'visited in the cafes' (should be 'visited cafes') and 'a instant coffee' (should be 'an instant coffee'). To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'consumption', 'preference', and 'fluctuate'. Expanding your range of synonyms will help you avoid repeating the same words throughout the text and make your writing more engaging and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the response, including issues with articles ('a instant coffee'), prepositions ('visited in the cafes'), and subject-verb agreement. The sentence structures are mostly simple, with very few attempts at complex sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before commas and periods. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like article usage and verb forms. Incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions, will help demonstrate better control over your grammar.
