Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the chart, such as the high rates of cafe visits in Hobart and Melbourne and the preference for instant coffee in Adelaide. However, the report lacks a clear overview of the data trends, and the comparison between cities is somewhat disjointed. While the key features are identified, the analysis is limited, and some data points are presented without sufficient context or clear comparison. To improve, ensure that the overview highlights the most significant trends across all categories rather than just listing specific city data. The response addresses the prompt but lacks the depth required for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'in last 4 weeks' and 'which was around'. The progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and a lack of smooth transitions between sentences. For example, the transition between the general overview and the specific city details is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'that proposition') is clear and accurate would significantly enhance the flow of the writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher levels. There are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'have habit to buying' instead of 'have a habit of buying' and 'mostly people' instead of 'the majority of people'. The repetition of basic terms like 'bought' and 'people' limits the range. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to use more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'percentage', 'trend', or 'consumption', and avoid repeating the same phrases throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. There are persistent issues with verb tenses and forms, such as 'were went to a cafe' instead of 'went to a cafe' and 'prefer to to went' instead of 'prefer to go'. Additionally, there are errors in subject-verb agreement and sentence structure, such as 'a people who live' and 'that percentage as similar as'. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, these are often faulty. Focusing on basic sentence construction and ensuring correct verb forms would help improve the clarity and accuracy of your writing.
