Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to summarize the data, but it fails to provide a clear overview or highlight significant trends. The information is presented as a list of figures rather than a cohesive analysis. While the response covers the five cities, the data reporting is often inaccurate or confusing, such as the claim that Melbourne had the highest sales in all categories, which is not clearly supported by the provided data. The lack of a clear summary of main features and the failure to make meaningful comparisons between the cities significantly limits the achievement of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is very limited and often repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'in last four weeks' and 'was sale'. The transition between sentences is mechanical, and the lack of logical flow makes it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison of data. The referencing is also unclear, as the text jumps between cities without a consistent structure or logical grouping of the information.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. The student relies heavily on basic verbs like 'sale' (incorrectly used as a verb) and 'shows'. There is no attempt to use a range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained stable'. The word choice is often inaccurate, such as using 'sale' instead of 'sold' or 'sales'. The lack of variety in lexical items prevents the expression of precise meaning, which is necessary for an Academic Task 1 response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are consistent issues with verb tense and form, such as 'The bar chart was shows' and 'Melbourne cities sale'. Subject-verb agreement is frequently incorrect, and the sentence structures are simplistic and repetitive. There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and punctuation is often misused. These persistent errors make the text difficult to read and demonstrate a very limited control over basic grammatical structures.
