Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the task by identifying key features of the chart, such as the popularity of coffee and tea across the five cities. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial and lacks a clear, logical grouping of data. While the main features are mentioned, the comparison between cities is inconsistent, and some data points are misreported (e.g., '540%' for Hobart). The overview is present but could be more effectively integrated to highlight the most significant trends rather than just listing figures. To improve, focus on grouping cities with similar trends rather than describing them city-by-city, which leads to a repetitive structure.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the flow of information is disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and often mechanical or misused, such as 'probing further' and 'following by'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the five cities. The progression of ideas is not always logical, as the transition between cities and categories feels abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'bought', 'purchased', and 'residents'. There are several spelling errors, such as 'melbocum', 'resturantrs', 'citizes', and 'intersest', which occasionally impede readability. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate precision or flexibility. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider variety of synonyms for 'increase', 'decrease', 'high', and 'low', and ensure that you are using topic-specific vocabulary correctly in context. Accuracy in spelling is also a critical area for improvement.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that affect the clarity of the message. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'people was purchased', 'residents was visited') and incorrect verb forms. The sentence structures are predominantly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences are often marred by errors in syntax and punctuation. For example, 'the melbocum was showed a highest residents' is grammatically incorrect. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically the correct use of active and passive voice, and ensure that your verb tenses are consistent throughout the report.
